Skateboarding
Lately ive been asking myself what skating really means to me, and what skating really means to others. When i first started in the summer of going into 8th grade, i didnt realize what i was really getting myself into. I had watched richard and sam skate during lunch and i see them attempt a kickfip and id get psyched. When i originally started, skating was a new trend that hit Roslyn. Soon everyone was wearing NOFX and Mephiskapheles t shirts, with chained wallets and JNCO's. I looked up to alot of people who were older than me, especially peter toh cuz he was the first person to come up to me to ask me to skate. He was one of my influences, cuz any kid starting out knew about him cuz he was so damn good. For a long time i skated alone, often calling the kids in the nieghborhood to come outside to skate. Because of skating alone, i was forced to watch ESPN and tape the stupid B3 and X-games shows. Id play Geoff Rowley's kickflips in slow motion to try to learn. It is so much harder to learn off of the tv than a person. At this time Richie and Sam hated me, so i wouldnt dare ask them to skate. The first time i actually skated with them was at the chooch. I found this nice pipe that was about a foot high and 5 feet long. I used to set it up on the island curb and boardslide down it. I remember that richie and sam came down and it crossed my mind to just leave. I figured, if i left, ill never have anyone older than me to skate with, so i stayed. After about 15 mins of not saying anything, richie came over and said whats up. I was surprised because for the last year he had been calling me poser and making fun of me. He asked me what deck i was riding, and so on. From there we skated around and i went home. I still felt as if i wasnt "accepted" by them though. Right now, looking back on it, it sounds so stupid. Anyway, i still wouldnt go to their house to call them to skate. One time i was skating Heights when sam came up to me and said "eddie you can knock on my door to call me to skate." I think after that i regulalry knocked on his door for us to skate. By this time skating was already considered "unpopular" by the Roslyn community, but we didnt care. After school i would rush down to either the chooch or heights to skate with bob & crew or the funbox with sam richie and paul. Even though at this time we sucked, it was still the most fun ever. By the time i reached 9th grade, many skaters that i had met through richie and sam quit. Paul claimed "no one calls me anymore", jesse said "skatings gay", and the rest gave it up for smoking pot. I couldnt understand how they just gave it up like that. Its not like i cared, but i cared for skating so much more i guess and still do. In 9th grade i also met a kid named justin. His friends sister came around looking for him, and i had no idea who they were talking about. "He rides a skateboard" she said. I got so psyched. Another skater! When i met him, i saw him chilling with john and i walked up to him. "What up" i said. He replied with a scared "hey". We skated for a while, and i think he was mad intimidated by my 180's off the curb! Anyway, we became pretty good friends, and id call him out everyday to skate. Now we move into tenth grade, presently this year 2000-2001. Its been a pretty depressing skating year to say the least. First off, by summer time sam basically gave up skating altogether. I also met greg by summer time, which added a new friend to my life. Me, richie and greg skated most of the time in the summer. By the time school started, justin hadnt skated because he really wasnt motivated. He was in the middle of moving, and its hard to get motivated when no ones around to skate, i know. I met GONG, like second quarter, and immediatley forced my skating propaganda on him! I knew that skating was becoming stale, and i needed something or someone fresh to liven it up. As it is right now, me, gong, greg, jake, dave, and david skate everyday. I dont really know whats going on with richie. Hes acting out of character lately, like all hip hop and everything. Only time will tell if skatings in his future, but as of right now, i consider him a nonfactor in skateboarding. I feel i care the most about skating out of all of them. I feel bad cuz theyre not skating in a time when it was popular. I got the last of the popular skating days. I get the feeling im the only one who cares about skating cuz when i go out with greg, jake, and dave, i know well be running from the cops in less then ten mins. When i first started, it was all about skating. When i skate with them its all about throwing snowballs and causing trouble, oh yeah, with a little skating in between. Skating is something i cant describe in words. There is no feeling better than trying to kickflip a set of stairs thats been taking 30 tries. Youre sore, youre tired, and youre pissed at yourself for not landing it yet. Finally you get a song in your head, you reach the stairs and flip your deck. At this moment your mind goes blank. You CANT think of anything. Well you catch the deck, that is the feeling that makes skating so great. It takes forever, but when you finally get it, it is all worth it. Right now i feel kinda lonely skating wise, but gong is here, and justin makes his-once-in-a-while appearances. Ive been so busy, that skating has taken a back seat. This vacation i promised myself i would come back to all the spots and bust out. I need to make up for missed sessions in one vacation. So far everything is going well. Im really determined to do some crazy tricks over this vacation, and cant wait to hurt myself over the summer.
